Dealing with Fear of People's opinions

Image
We are living in a fast changing world where everybody has something to say about everything that is happening. Most often than not, our lives are pegged on the question, ‘’What will people say?’’ Well this is a good question to ask oneself because it shows a consciousness towards the people around you and the society at large. Nevertheless, if a consideration on this question is the reason that an individual remains stuck in one position all their life, then there is need for a reconsideration. Now, this does not mean support of a certain level of arrogance in individuals who feel that that they have no need to be subject to anyone nor listen to any authority over their lives. Referring to psychology studies by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham in what is called the Johari Window, we all need people’s opinion in one way or another. The problem comes when we fear hearing those opinions and become paralyzed in our progress. According to the Johari window, an individual has four areas i...

WHO'S BACKING YOU?

At one time in my life I have served in the praise & worship team in church. Honestly speaking, I can tell you that its quite a big deal if you don’t have the ‘’nice vocals’’. In my early days of joining the team, due to my limitation in producing a nice music sound that could send congregants to their knees, 99% of my participation was in the backup. Projecting our voices for the purposes of supporting the lead singer, hence perform a nice worship/praise was our main task. I can’t tell how many times I got red in the eyes after being chocked by saliva for trying to project my voice beyond my capability. You can imagine the struggle of trying to hold in the cough and still hold the microphone as if nothing is wrong. There are times I could hear myself hitting a strong ‘’off key’’ at the top of my voice, the kind that makes people stop singing first so that they can reconnect again. I won’t lie, severally at this point, I could intentionally switch off the microphone and still...

THE PERSPECTIVE

“ Because it has happened to others, don’t think it can’t happen to you.” This statement is much familiar with a lot of people but the difference comes in the internalization of it. It’s actually hard to internalize such a statement when you put into context certain misfortunes and circumstances that meet people in this life. When you put the reality on the table and try to associate with it, most often it doesn’t add up- Sort of to say: 1+1= 11 and not 2 as we all know. But why? In the line of life; some are starting out, others are midway and some are almost there but none is there yet. The ability to see life in a wider perspective is to a larger percentage depended on one’s level of exposure to different life situations. Depending on where you are in the line of life, there could be tendencies to wrongly judge a situation that someone else is undergoing not knowing that it can equally come to you.  At one time, Jesus told His disciples that, ‘’As long as you are in the world, y...

ABORTION.

When this word ‘abortion’ is mentioned, it brings different impression to different people To most of us; it’s a crime against humanity and sin against God To some; “It’s a legal right to do away with that which invades another without permission to do so”. To others; it’s like a traumatizing movie in which they acted as the starring.   To others; it’s like a lion they escaped from its mouth which nearly crushed them to death. Nevertheless, when viewed from another perspective, this word can actually make one stop thinking ‘normally’ to the ways they are used to. What would you do if you knew the Formulae to finding the solution to the equation why you are in that situation you never thought you would be? In this case, will define Abortion as an act of the mind that entails uprooting and bringing down any productive thought that is meant to bare fruits of success. Abortion has taken away many lives, it has destroyed dreams and it has killed the hope of many. Each passing...

WHY ALL THE MESS?

On this particular evening I was really angry but ‘stupidly’ angry because no one had crossed my path. Many are the times we get annoyed because some people or somebody has just tampered with our temperament. As I alighted a bus and headed to the place of my residence in one of the slums in Nairobi, I could hardly find a place to step! I looked at my purely white dress, my stiletto shoes and imagined how I was going to walk on the muddy road with dirty sewage water flowing all over. This was as a result of the heavy downpour that had occurred that evening. I stood fixed on my tracks not knowing what to do next but the more I stood there the more I got angry. The smell of the sewage water was unbearable to my nose; the mud could not allow me walk on with my stilettos. The dirt of every kind carried by the flowing water made the situation very disgusting and worse of all, my pure white dress was not going to survive all that mess!  Just then a thought flashed through my mind an...
